In celebration of Women’s History Month, we are delighted to share diverse samples of ongoing work to advance women and gender equity by CPL faculty and leaders in practice, as well as by current and former students in our community.

When Gender Matters in Organizational Negotiations

A person's gender is not a reliable predictor of their negotiation behavior or outcomes, because the degree and character of gender dynamics in negotiation vary across situations. In a recent article published in Annual Review of Organizational Psychology and Organizational Behavior, Hannah Riley Bowles and her co-authors explain how two categories of situational factors moderate intersectional effects of gender on negotiation.

New Online Resource: Negotiate WELL

CPL and WAPPP Co-Director Hannah Riley Bowles has launched the Negotiate WELL (Work, Education, Life, & Leadership), an online collection of multi-media educational materials that support teaching and learning on gender in negotiation and career-related negotiations. The collection includes teaching plans with slides and instructional materials. Read press release

The rise of women into society's most powerful leadership roles—across sectors and around the globe—ranks among the most profound social transformations in recent decades.

Women and Power is a one-week executive program that focuses on teaching effective leadership strategies, with an emphasis on creating successful alliances and enduring partnerships. At its core, the program is an intense experience designed to help women advance to top positions of influence in public leadership.

This year's session runs from May 15, 2022 - May 20, 2022. Application details are provided at the link below.

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

Former United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Director; First female Deputy President of South Africa

As a Hauser Leader this semester, Phumzile has maximized her time on campus to engage with our community on gender issues, including an event on "Bridging the Global Digital Divide for Women and Girls through Multilateral Diplomacy" in collaboration with the Belfer Center and a student roundtable with CPL’s Public Leadership Cohort. At the Harvard Africa Business Conference, Phumzile received a standing ovation for her keynote address, in which she advocated for gender inclusion, digital literacy, and for African Harvard students to return to Africa and run for office.

Pictured is Phumzile visiting Professor Dara Kay Cohen's Gender and Violence class. Drawing on her experience founding HeForShe while directing UN Women, Phumzile delivered a guest lecture on engaging men in the eradication of gender-based abuse.

Shortly before arriving on campus, Phumzile was announced as the 2022 winner of the Forbes Woman Africa Lifetime Achievement Award.

Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto

Former Mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico; Leader in Practice, Women and Public Policy Program

As both a Hauser Leader and WAPPP Leader in Practice, Yulín has been at the forefront of CPL and WAPPP's collaboration this semester. At right, she is pictured leading students in a session of From Harvard Square to the Oval Office: A Political Campaign Practicum. Below, she spoke of the strong women that raised her in Puerto Rico at an International Women’s Day event.
