New Data Events Launching This Fall

Hello and welcome to the new Library & Research Services newsletter! Once focused on Data + Donuts, this newsletter will now highlight even more HKS Library events, new library resources, collections highlights, and beyond.

Speaking of even more events, starting this fall we're expanding our data-focused event offerings! Starting in mid-August, you can look forward to:

Software Carpentry: a two-day, hands-on workshops that will give you the foundational knowledge to pursue data-intensive research with confidence. We'll host one workshop per semester, just before the start of classes.
Programming + Pizza: a peer-to-peer mentoring group where those interested in programming tools and computational research can build skills and community. We'll host several events throughout each semester.
Data + Donuts: a learning and discussion group that offers a welcoming space to engage critically with issues of data and society. Since 2018, we've hosted several events throughout each semester.

We're working on speaker lineups for P+P and D+D right now, but registration is open for our inaugural Software Carpentry workshop.

Software Carpentry

Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19, 2022
9:00am-4:30pm

With Software Carpentry, you'll learn basic tools and concepts to prepare you to contribute to a public policy landscape where data and technical skills are in increasingly high demand. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

In this workshop, you’ll learn program design, version control, data management, and task automation using the following tools:

Unix Shell
Git
R
Text editor

You don't need any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop to register. Non-HKS affiliates are welcome to register, though we are reserving a majority of the slots for HKS affiliates.

Coffee, pastries, and lunch will be provided both days.
