In Commencement address, Dean Weinstein lauds the School's global student body |
Dean Jeremy Weinstein celebrated the 605 graduates of the HKS Class of 2025 at the Harvard Kennedy School Commencement celebrations last week, calling on them “enter the arena and stay in the fight.” Weinstein’s inaugural Commencement address came in the wake of rapid-fire actions by both the U.S. government and federal courts concerning the ability of international students to attend the nation’s oldest university: “Our moment of celebration comes at a difficult time. A set of core commitments that are essential to Harvard’s excellence—the freedom to think, to speak, to teach, and to write, free from government interference—are being challenged in ways I could not have imagined only months ago.” Weinstein also pledged support to all HKS students, telling international students that “we will continue to fight for your right to be here as equal members of our community.”

Executive orders as a governing tool |
The Constitution gives the president the legal foundation to issue executive orders, which articulate policies he wants put in place and help establish priorities. Recently, executive order directives have eclipsed actual legislation. President Trump has signed more than 150 executive orders, setting a record for the most signed in any president’s first 100 days of office. By contrast, Trump has signed only five bills into law, a record low for the first 100 days. In this conversation, HKS Professor Roger Porter, who served for more than a decade in the White House under Presidents Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush, explains what executive orders are, why and how they have historically been used, and why Trump may be favoring them now.

MPA/ID program celebrates 25 years of global impact |
The MPA/ID program, which has trained hundreds of leaders who have gone on to help build prosperity in low- and middle-income countries, celebrated its 25th anniversary this year. Professor Dani Rodrik was asked by then-Dean Joseph Nye to lead the program in 2000, with a focus on economic growth in countries outside of the United States. Rodrik, who was succeeded as the program’s faculty director by Professor Eliana La Ferrara in May, said every part of the curriculum was designed “from the ground up to attract future leaders who were committed to action.”
