A Strategy for Building Canada's Post-America Economy |
|
|
In coordination with the release of his new book, Canada After America: A Strategy for Prosperity in a Changed World, Ricardo Hausmann is participating in McGill University's Max Bell Lecture Series. Co-authored with Eric Protzer, the book examines Canada's deep economic reliance on the United States and outlines strategies to build global supply chains, reshape private-sector innovation, and compete internationally in industries like aerospace, life sciences, and technology.
The next lecture is online on November 12. Learn more and register for the event.
To explore the strategies and concepts of the book, read Ricardo and Eric's op-ed in Project Syndicate, and this interview with Canadian journalist Paul Wells.

How Geopolitical Tensions Impact International Research Collaborations |
New research published in the journal Research Policy links increases in geopolitical distance to reductions in international research and innovation collaborations. This negative association is especially pronounced in critical fields such as quantum technologies, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy, as well as in collaborations involving the United States and China. The researchers also find that these reductions in research collaborations are three times larger than gains associated with improvements, suggesting that the partnerships are easier to damage than to build. At the same time, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions, overall collaboration patterns have not changed substantially in recent years, suggesting resilience in international research and innovation networks.

The Pathway Out of Macroeconomic Crisis for Malawi |
Our applied research team investigated Malawi's macroeconomic crisis and diagnosed the binding constraints behind its foreign exchange shortages, high inflation, domestic debt pressures, and weak export performance. They developed practical reform options to restore macroeconomic stability, mobilize productive investment, and unlock new drivers of growth. The research is intended to inform a homegrown policy agenda that could help Malawi move from crisis management toward broader economic transformation. Malawians have untapped potential, and their businesses are highly enterprising. With significant opportunities in agriculture, mining, tourism, and other sectors, Malawi could achieve stronger, more inclusive growth if macroeconomic conditions can be improved.

Competitiveness and Opportunities for European Clean Tech |
In a new research collaboration between the Growth Lab and Bruegel, researchers find that the European Union is gradually becoming less competitive in green value chains, implying that it is becoming less well-positioned to generate economic growth from these industries. Using measures of EU specialization in green exports, they find wide variation across countries and technologies. For example, Belgium has a solid industrial base in batteries and wind power, while Italy, Germany, and Poland are more specialized than other countries in heat pumps. The authors identify sectors and regions where Europe can strengthen its position, build competitiveness in new industries, and generate economic growth through the energy transition, and they offer policy priorities to guide clean-technology investments.
