Pathways to secure housing for people leaving prison in Colorado |
Colorado is testing a new approach to one of reentry’s challenges: connecting people leaving prison with homes. Harvard Kennedy School’s Government Performance Lab helped the Colorado Department of Corrections create systems to identify people at risk of being released without a stable place to live. The effort brought together corrections officials, housing providers, and community partners to identify barriers that make it difficult for people with criminal records to secure housing. Read more about the Government Performance Lab’s collaboration with Colorado to help clear pathways from incarceration to housing stability.

China is leading on green energy—but fossil fuels remain part of its strategy |
China has rapidly expanded its investment in renewable energy. But that growth does not necessarily amount to a full energy transition, according to experts at a recent event at HKS’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government. The event, “The Great Energy Divide: Petro America vs. Electro China,” considered how, while renewable capacity has surged, fossil fuels—particularly coal and petrochemicals—remain central to China’s energy system. The analysts cautioned against equating investment in renewables with a structural shift away from carbon-intensive energy. Read about the panel or watch the recording.

Daily AI use is associated with depressive symptoms |
New research explores connections between everyday use of artificial intelligence and depression. The study, by lead author Dr. Roy from Harvard Medical School and co-authors including HKS Professor Matthew Baum, finds an association between daily AI use and increased depressive symptoms. While the findings do not claim that AI causes depression, they identify a statistical relationship that warrants further scrutiny. As AI tools become embedded in work and daily life, understanding how frequency and type of use intersect with mental health outcomes is increasingly important. The research contributes to a broader conversation on technology and psychological health and highlights the need to study how digital tools shape behavior, social interaction, and emotional well-being.

What we're Doing |
“FIFA, the Olympics, a marathon, major events—or what’s often called mega events—are opportunities for cities and states and private sector to come together for a pivotal moment,” including issues related to economics, transportation and security, Professor Juliette Kayyem says. “They’re transitory, but they have the opportunity to be transformative.” Kayyem is the faculty chair of Harvard Kennedy School’s four-day Executive Education course “Major Events: Navigating Opportunities and Challenges,” running this April.
