New Book Display: Native American / Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month |
Native American / Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month was created in 1976 to honor the cultures, histories, and accomplishments of Indigenous peoples in the United States, and to raise awareness of the unique challenges they have faced and continue to face. The observance was first championed by Jerry C. Elliott-High Eagle, a member of the Cherokee / Osage tribes who was one of the first Native Americans to work at NASA. Originally recognized as Native American Awareness Week by President Gerald Ford, the observance was expanded into the whole month of November in 1990 under George H.W. Bush.
In this book display observing Native American / Indigenous Peoples Heritage Month, you'll find literature, memoirs, and nonfiction about Native American and Indigenous identities, experiences, politics, activism, and history. |

Harvard University is located on the traditional and ancestral land of the Massachusett, the original inhabitants of what is now known as Boston and Cambridge. We pay respect to the people of the Massachusett Tribe, past and present, and honor the land itself which remains sacred to the Massachusett People.
