Business & Regulation |
Crypto is merging with mainstream finance. Regulators aren’t ready. |
Thanks to some new types of digital assets, interest from Wall Street and the Trump administration, and some bills currently before Congress, crypto looks like it could soon go mainstream and become integrated into the financial system. In a new episode of PolicyCast, Timothy Massad, a senior fellow at the Kennedy School’s Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government, and Harvard Law School Professor Howell Jackson say new digital assets like stablecoins can benefit consumers, but only if Congress passes vital regulatory controls. Massad and Jackson were at the forefront of early attempts to regulate digital assets. They discuss what’s new in the world of cryptocurrency, where things are headed, and share some recommendations on how to make sure digital assets really are assets to ordinary people and not the source of the next financial meltdown.

A new Shorenstein Center series aims to demystify government for journalists |
A new series launched this month at HKS aims to break down the ever more complex workings of government for journalists and the public. The series, Unlocked, aims to provide clear, authoritative explanations of government systems, structures, and processes from the people who understand them best. It will be produced by the Shorenstein Center for Media, Politics and Public Policy and The Journalist’s Resource, a project of the center focused on informing the news by bridging the gap between academia and the media. The multimedia series will include written explainers, videos, and audio content covering topics such as federal job structures, the functions of various government departments and programs, and practical guidance for finding and interpreting government information.

Wanted: educators with experience preparing workers for good jobs |
Community colleges are the forefront of career and technical education in the United States, experts say. At a convening at HKS this month, researchers sought to learn how they are helping prepare people for good jobs. “We learned from two dozen practitioners who run some of the best worker training programs in the country how to work effectively with employers, forecast the needs of a varied and always changing student body, and coordinate with local economic development agencies to address the needs of their regional economies,” said HKS Professor Gordon Hanson. Hanson is co-founder of Reimagining the Economy, an initiative based at the Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy that studies the people and places that economic forces such as automation and globalization have left behind, and tries to plot new pathways to productive growth and good jobs.

Racial diversity of scientists could increase enrollment of Black clinical trial participants |
What role does a clinical trial investigator’s race play in determining the participant pool? Research from HKS Professor Marcella Alsan and her co-authors found that Black participants’ interest in clinical studies increased by 12.6% when the study was led by a Black principal investigator. Black Americans are underrepresented in clinical trials: Despite accounting for 13% of the U.S. population and suffering disproportionately from certain conditions, only 5% of clinical trial participants in the United States are Black. A lack of representation in clinical trials could compromise the validity of research conclusions, reduce opportunities to benefit from medical innovation, and contribute to increasing racial disparities in morbidity rates. “This research was motivated by a desire to give all patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials—which has inherent risk but also can be the only way to access life-saving innovative treatments,” Alsan said.
