New book display: Arab American Heritage Month 📚
April is Arab American Heritage month! Launched in 2017 by the Arab American Foundation, the month is an opportunity to celebrate the Arab American community's "rich heritage and numerous contributions to society."
The Arab American Foundation traces its roots to Kahlil Gibran, the celebrated Lebanese-American writer, poet, and philosopher. A century ago, Gibran helped create Al Mahjar ("The Pen League"): a collective of writers and scholars who immigrated to America and "encouraged the revitalization of Arab literature."
(Fun fact: Gibran spent much of his early life in Boston after immigrating with his mother and siblings. Living in the South End, he educated himself at the Boston Public Library and wrote the first draft of his acclaimed work The Prophet in Buzzards Bay.)
The books in this month's display pay homage to this Arab American literary tradition, featuring works by Mahjari and contemporary writers and scholars.
Explore the display in person in the HKS Library or online. | | | | |
