Latanya Sweeney appears on “Systems Failure,” a new HKS PolicyCast series
To kick off the fall 2021 season of HKS PolicyCast, we have launched a mini-series of podcast episodes called “Systems Failure.” It features conversations on how economic, technological, and other systems are exacerbating inequality, even as they play an increasingly central role in how we live our lives. First up, Professor Latanya Sweeney, who is a pioneer in the fields of algorithmic bias, data privacy, and the public impact of technology and was the first Black woman to earn a PhD in computer science at MIT. A former chief technology officer at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, her work has been citied in key U.S. privacy regulations, including the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Sweeney talks to host Ralph Ranalli about how eroding digital privacy and baked-in bias in technological systems threaten vulnerable populations the most. |
