The good, the bad, and the unknown of artificial intelligence
HKS faculty experts explored the promise and peril of artificial intelligence at a “Dean’s Discussion” panel for the HKS community. Senior Lecturer Dan Levy, Professor Sharad Goel, and Adjunct Lecturer Bruce Schneier considered the impact of AI on innovation, teaching and learning, and democracy and politics. “It’s very much like science fiction here,” Schneier said. “Science fiction uses the future to talk about the present, and we are afraid of the corporations that are controlling AI.” The panelists considered whether regulation might help societies use the good of technology while limiting the potential for harm. “I don’t think anybody has a real idea what’s going to happen in 10 or 20 years,” Goel, said. “All this is pure speculation.”
